David Gauntlett’s Media Studies 2.0 theory

David Gauntlett’s Media Studies 2.0 theory

Firstly to come to an understanding of Media studies 2.0 we need to look at the several characteristics of Media Studies 1.0

Media studies 1.0 looks into the traditional approach to media

Point number one- Expert’s opinions on popular culture are seen as more significant than those of the audience.
-Powerful media industries and well- known critics are regarded more.
-Students are supposed to read media texts in the appropriate way.
-Focuses on traditional media
-Little recognition on the internet and new digital media
-Conventional research methods treat people like non experts or receivers.

So here's Media Studies 2.0

This is an alternative to the above traditional approach to Media Studies 1.0.
-The ‘Expert’ reading of texts is replaced, with a focus on the everyday meanings and a focus on the diverse audience.
-Classic conventions, ‘Avant garde’ texts and a focus on traditional media are replaced. An Interest in the ‘long tail’ of independent media projects, such as YouTube appears.
-The focus on primarily western media is replaced, shows diverse perspectives.
-The internet and new digital media are now recognised as having changed the ways of engagement with all media.
-Recognisi0n that media audiences in general can interpret media content, rather than the students being taught how to ‘read’.
-Conventional research method’s replaced, which recognise people’s creativity.
-The notion that powerful media industries are invading minds, of the passive audience, is reworked.
